Basically Babies - 2009/2010 Charity Project |
|
Basically Babies Ltd Quilt Charity Project now has 40 quilts donated by the Guild members. In an effort to encourage participation, I will be hosting a charity quilting bee on Sunday, April 11, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. It will be held in the north end of town at 7812 - 163 Ave. There will be fabric available. We are also looking for donated fabric, cut into 4 ½" squares. All you need to do is sew the pieces together! Please bring your sewing machine and a spool of neutral-coloured thread. We have arranged for them to be quilted on a longarm machine and bound so that they are ready for delivery!
There is a a large workshop area that could easily accommodate 10 people. Please sign up at the table in the foyer before the Guild meeting, in March. There will also be plenty of flannelette for piecing and backing, as well as batting available to finish your projects. Please contact the second VP if you require batting or backing, and it can be brought to the Guild meeting for you. Once again, many thanks for caring.
If you have donated a charity quilt, please come and register your name at the table in the foyer before the Guild meeting. All donor names will be entered for a prize draw, to be chosen at the annual year-end banquet.
Labels for the charity quilts, with the EDQG logo, will be available for pick up.

Nov. Reminder: Please bring your donations for the Christmas charity (Mustard Seed Church) to the November meeting. (See page 5 of the October newsletter for details.) This will be your last opportunity, as the gifts of toiletries, new underwear, mitts toques; etc… will be delivered at the beginning of December. The Project: EDQG's Christmas Charity this year is The Mustard Seed Church. This inner city facility provides meals, clothing and comfort to the homeless population in Edmonton. They would greatly appreciate donations of: - New underwear for men and women in a variety of sizes, but especially sizes Large or Extra Large
- New socks, especially heavier socks for the winter weather
- Personal items such as shampoo and conditioner, razors, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant and foot powder
These items will be collected at the October and November meeting and delivered to the facility before Christmas. Please leave your donated gifts with the 2nd VP, at the table in the museum foyer. Thank you and God bless you for your kindness! The Mustard Seed website (Link) |

2008-2009 Year-end Report |
|
It has been a privilege to serve as chair of the charity program for the last two years. The charity section of the guild allows us to use our love of colour and fabric to give back to and connect with our community; as well as promoting our profile in the city. During this time we have decorated 2 Christmas trees for the Festival of Trees. We have also gathered car loads of personal toiletry items for the Youth Emergency Shelter as well as $647.30 for the Second Wind Dreams program at the Edmonton General Hospital. In 2007/08 guild members made over 111 lap quilts for the Blankets of Love organization which gives quilts to mental health patients at the University Hospital and the Alberta Hospital. This culminated in a tea and show of all our work. In 2008/09 over 191 baby quilts were donated to the Eastwood Public Health Centre. Diane Reiser, in voicing her appreciation, left us with no doubt about the need for these items. Thanks to my great team – Eileen Fairbrother and the Killer Bees. Joan Kovacs 2nd Vice President |

Thank you for your generous support in making baby quilts for the Eastwood Public Health Centre. The April meeting is the final month to hand in your charity quilts – baby quilts for the Eastwood Public Health Centre. Please bring them with labels (stating EDQG – 2009) and bring them to the stage. We will have a short parade of quilts before I hand them over to the Eastwood Public Health Centre. In March, I gave them 46 quilts. Thanks to Lois Miller who made more labels, all of which were handed out at the March meeting. Also, please put your name in the basket for the draw in May. I am looking forward to being swamped by generous donations of baby quilts. |

Sherard Players Stage Curtain |
|
Anne of Green Gables- Epilogue What is 28’ X 40’, weighs 60 pounds and cost $800? Answer: the quilt top for the Sherard Players theatre production of Anne of Green Gables. This wonderful backdrop was masterminded by Colette Martin. The design and the colours worked perfectly and the frame that held it up was a marvel. Congratulations to Colette and all those who helped her. And the play, a rise-to-your-feet delight, nonetheless sent us off wiping away a tear or two, and left us humming the songs for days afterward. I loved it and I hope that many of you took advantage of the opportunity to see this excellent production on the 100th anniversary of the creation of this enduring story by a Canadian woman, Lucy Maud Montgomery, who was a role model of courage for many who came after her. |
