| Our EDQG Newsletter is published and distributed to each member nine times a year. It is also available via e-mail as well as on the website in a member’s only section. The EDQG First Vice President hosts two weekend retreats a year in the spring and the fall. They are held at Camp He Ho Ha on Lake Isle. She and her committee also host a UFO workday in January. Two monetary Guild Grants are available to members to attend educational opportunities in a traditional quilt category and an art quilt category. As a result they present a program at a Guild meeting and a one day workshop on something they have learned from attending their classes. In addition the Guild presents two awards for two members who have developed their own classes on a particular subject. In return each quilt maker presents a one day class. In addition the Program Committee hosts a special weekend winter workshop taught by a professional guest quilter. Check the Program Committee link for a detailed list of speakers, events and workshops. Our online picture gallery will give you some idea of the scope of our outcomes from attending those workshops. There is an orientation reception for new members held in the fall. The Get Connected Workshop is hosted by the Beekeeper to welcome all members’ especially new members to the Guild. The Beekeeper endeavors to assist members to join or form “bee” groups – smaller groups of members who get together in addition to the general meeting to pursue the social and educational aspects of quilting while focusing on a particular style, purpose or common interest. Challenges and group projects are also a bee group activity. ( link to Beekeeper’s e-mail) The EDQG owns an extensive lending library of quilting books for members to borrow. The list is available to members through the members website and books may be borrowed for a month.

Challenges

Each year members are challenged to stretch their skills and creativity by trying something new or by applying an existing skill in a new way. This year all of the entries were an original design with the theme of One's Own Treasures. Participants received written feedback from the two judges. The judges are chosen from the Guild members who have had some judging training. This opportunity is provided as professional development for the chosen judges and the roster changes. The Guild deals with the judging of the challenge in a professional way and great care is taken to ensure that the entries are anonymous. Our judges this year were Dawna Dey Harrish and Randall Eckert. The category winners receive a hand made button and bead rosette. These rosettes are coveted and greatly sought after. This year the wild rose beauties were made by Karen Ostachuk. To encourage new entries we had a category for first time entries. Quilting Bees
|
FOR NEWBEES AND WANNABEES Are you new to the guild or do you want to connect up with other members in a bee group for fun, friendship and learning? I will be hosting a Get Connected Workshop - on Saturday November 14, 2009
- from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- at the South East Community Police Station. The address is #104 Youville Drive at approximately 28th Avenue and 55th Street, just south of the Grey Nun’s Hospital.
The purpose of the workshop is to help people join a bee group or start a new bee group. Cathy Farmer, of Sherwood Park is a member of my Bee Group called the Loose Threads. She has graciously agreed to lead us in a quilting method called English Paper Piecing. Participants will learn the basics of the Grandmother’s Flower Garden hexagonal block. A diamond shape will also be demonstrated. Refreshments will be served. Bring your hand sewing kit: needle, neutral thread and small scissors. Fabrics and templates will be provided. A cost of $7.00 per person will help defray the cost of materials and refreshments. You can sign up at the Beekeeper’s table at the October guild meeting. Just look for the Bee on a Stick. |
